Move characters off archetype with grounded specifics.

  1. What did this character get wrong about the world before age fifteen, and how did they correct it?

  2. What does this character refuse to talk about, even with their closest person?

  3. What does this character do alone that they would deny in public?

  4. What was their most recent humiliation, and how did they explain it to themselves?

  5. What are they competent at that they have never been recognized for?

  6. Who do they envy, and what specifically do they envy?

  7. What kind of stranger would they help instinctively, and what kind would they ignore?

  8. What is their relationship to money — fear, contempt, fascination, or indifference?

  9. What do they do in the first five minutes after waking?

  10. Who in their life knows the truth about them, and who do they keep deliberately misled?

  11. What scar — physical or otherwise — do they cover, and what do they tell people about it?

  12. What would push them past the line they swore they would never cross?
